Meet Our Rabbi, Amy Joy Small
CBH is not your average “neighborhood shul (synagogue)” where most members drop off their kids for Religious School while only a handful attend. In fact, our members live all over the MetroWest New Jersey area (roughly the area of our Jewish Federation) – in addition to our close-by Summit-Chatham-Madison folks, many of our members drive 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes to get to us. They do this out of the intentional choice to be part of our unique congregation. We strive to be engaged and engaging, to be based in Jewish tradition while responding to contemporary needs and interests. We don’t take anything for granted – we discuss and process our shared Jewish engagement. As a Reconstructionist community, we believe in the ongoing evolution of Judaism, and the adaptive process that keeps our Judaism relevant, meaningful and transformative. Together and as individuals, we explore Jewish ideas and practices through the lens of Jewish history, texts, and values – the array of Jewish values within our tradition and those values we have chosen to hold most dear as a community. We enjoy the gift of this empowering approach to being Jewish. At CBH you will find a loving family that cares for each other in good times and in sorrow. Our compassion extends to our efforts to do good in the world, to care for those less fortunate and to work for justice locally and beyond. We engage in a variety of interfaith activities to build stronger understanding, mutuality and a just and peaceful world. Our Religious School offers our families the opportunity to raise Jewish children who take their Judaism seriously and while developing joy and pride as Jews. I am especially happy to have the opportunity to teach our children and to lead our Religious School family Shabbat service. The joy of singing, the richness of our discussions, and the pride of the children’s accomplishments in learning prayer and ritual, fills my heart with joy. I hope you will come and visit our intergenerational community and add your own presence to our congregation. It will be my pleasure to greet you and get to know you. Please do not hesitate to call if you have questions. I look forward to meeting you. Kol Tuv (All the best), Rabbi Amy |
